Travelling to Salt Spring Island is easiest to do from Victoria, as BC Ferries only requires you to pay for one-way, so that is a major bonus. There are a variety of things to do on Salt Spring Island, but one of the neatest things to do is to go visit the local Saturday Market, right in the middle of Ganges Harbour.
Here you can find unique crafts, food, drinks, art, clothing, and more! Another neat thing about the market, is that they actually have a doggy daycare service, by donation, put on by the Salt Spring Island SPCA.
For more doggy socialization, the best dog park on the island is called Rainbow Road dog park, and is located in front of the indoor pool. The doggy daycare enables that there are no dogs within the Farmers Market booths, so both pet and owner can enjoy themselves at the market. In and around the Ganges Harbour there are all the services you could want, including grocery stores, hardware stores, art galleries, banks, and much more.
Getting Around Salt Spring Island
Getting out of town, you are surrounded by vast rolling hills, farms, wineries, fields, beaches, workshops, and parks. If you are interested in the arts and what it takes to be an artist in the Gulf Islands, then the “Studio Tour” is for you. The “Studio Tour,” is a map that plots out all the 34 workshops on the island.
These workshops are at/in people’s homes a lot of the time, so it is best to visit during the weekdays, where artists will be on-site to provide demonstrations or answer questions about their craft. Salt Spring also offers fabulous parks and beaches.
The must go to include: Dunabin Park, the hike up to Mount Maxwell (or a car worthy to take a bumpy road), Ruckle Provincial Park, Duck Creek Park, Bryant Hill Park, and Beddis Beach park. Other outdoor activities include the famous diving off of Beddis Beach, kayaking, boating, and more.
Explore The Wineries Around The Area
If wine is something on your list, then feel free to visit the three wineries on the island. These include the Garry Oaks Winery, Salt Spring Vineyards have a b & b on site, and Mistaken Identity has created a feeling of Tuscany on their grounds. Come discover Salt Spring Island!
